How to Actually Prepare for the CompTIA SecurityX Exam (CAS-005)

This isn’t a cert you can cram for. It’s a cert you prepare for over time, and the strategy matters.


The Reality of SecurityX

CompTIA SecurityX (CAS-005, formerly CASP+) is positioned as an expert-level certification. CompTIA targets practitioners with 10+ years of IT experience and 5+ years in security. That’s not an arbitrary number — the exam is genuinely hard to pass without real-world experience to draw on.

But experience alone isn’t enough. The exam format — complex scenarios, multi-part questions, and performance-based assessments — rewards structured preparation. People with legitimate expertise still fail because they underestimate what the exam specifically tests and how it tests it.

This is a study strategy guide, not a content summary. By the end, you’ll know what to prioritize, where to focus your time, and how to build confidence before exam day.


What the Exam Actually Looks Like

Format:

  • Up to 90 questions (mix of multiple choice and performance-based)
  • 165 minutes total time
  • Passing score: 750/900
  • No associate path — you pass or you don’t

You’re selecting the most appropriate option for the specific context.

That nuance is where people fail.


Phase 1: Assess Your Actual Gaps (Week 1–2)

Before opening a study guide, take a diagnostic practice exam. Don’t worry about your score — you’re identifying domain gaps, not measuring readiness.

Pay attention to which domains you’re weakest in. Common patterns:

  • Technical practitioners often struggle with GRC concepts (risk quantification, vendor risk management, audit frameworks) because they’ve never had to do this work formally.
  • GRC/compliance folks often struggle with Security Engineering specifics (cryptographic implementation decisions, secure protocol selection, PKI design).
  • Everyone underestimates the Security Architecture domain’s depth on cloud, hybrid, and zero trust patterns.

Map your gaps early. It’s more efficient to spend 60% of your prep time on weak domains than to study everything equally.

Best video option available. His scenario walkthroughs are particularly useful for learning how to think through complex questions, not just what the answers are.

Security Architecture:

  • NIST SP 800-207 (Zero Trust Architecture) — free, authoritative, ~50 pages. Read it.
  • Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) Security Guidance — free, covers cloud architecture patterns CompTIA draws from
  • MITRE ATT&CK framework — understand how the TTPs map to architectural controls

Security Engineering:

  • NIST SP 800-131A (Transitions for Cryptographic Algorithms) — understand which algorithms are deprecated and why

Why Practice Questions Are Different for SecurityX

SecurityX questions test judgment under ambiguity. You can know all the right facts and still fail because you’re applying them incorrectly in complex scenarios. Practice questions teach you:

  1. How to read the question properly — SecurityX stems are long and contain deliberate misdirection
  2. How to eliminate wrong answers systematically — not by guessing, but by identifying why options are wrong
  3. How to rank defensible answers — when multiple answers are technically correct, the exam wants the most complete, most context-appropriate, or most risk-aware choice

Tier 2 (Good Supplement):

Note: “consistently” means across multiple different question banks, not just one set you’ve seen before. Memorizing answers is not the same as learning to reason through new scenarios.


Phase 4: Performance-Based Question Practice (Weeks 8–12)

SecurityX PBQs appear early in the exam and can be significantly time-consuming. Common PBQ formats:

  • Drag-and-drop architecture diagrams — placing controls in the correct network zones
  • Log analysis — identifying attack patterns or configuration issues in provided log samples
  • Policy or configuration review — finding security misconfigurations in provided settings
  • Risk prioritization — ranking threats or vulnerabilities given environmental context

Strategy for PBQs:

  1. Skim the PBQ to understand the type of task required
  2. If it’s going to take more than 3 minutes, flag it and move to multiple choice
  3. Return to flagged PBQs with your remaining time after completing all multiple choice
  4. On architecture/diagram PBQs: start with what you’re certain about, place those elements, then work through ambiguous placements

If you haven’t done PBQ practice, you’ll be shocked by them on exam day. CompTIA’s sample questions include a few PBQ examples. Work through those until the format is familiar.


The Week Before the Exam

Days 7–4:

  • Do one full practice exam per day under timed conditions
  • Review every wrong answer in detail — not just “the right answer is B” but why B is correct and why your answer was wrong
  • Light review of GRC frameworks if that’s a weak area

Days 3–2:

  • Review your notes on weak domains
  • No new material — you’re reinforcing, not cramming
  • Light exercise, decent sleep, hydration — this sounds obvious but exam performance is affected by physical state

Day before:

  • Review your notes briefly in the morning
  • Stop studying by early afternoon
  • Confirm exam logistics: time, location, ID requirements
  • Decent dinner, reasonable bedtime

Exam day:

  • Eat before you go
  • Arrive early
  • Start with the first question, flag anything uncertain, keep moving

Common Failure Patterns (And How to Avoid Them)

1. Treating it like a knowledge test SecurityX tests judgment, not just facts. If your prep is entirely reading/watching without scenario practice, you’ll fail.

2. Skipping the GRC domain 20% of the exam. Technical practitioners who dismiss this domain routinely fail on these questions.

3. Getting bogged down on hard questions With 90 questions in 165 minutes, you have less than 2 minutes per question. Flag and move. Return with fresh eyes.

4. Underestimating cloud depth The CAS-005 version significantly increased cloud architecture coverage. If your study materials predate 2023, supplement them.

5. Over-studying one domain Hitting 95% on Security Engineering while getting 55% on GRC won’t pass you. Balance matters.


The Post-Exam Maintenance Plan

If you pass, start thinking about maintenance immediately:

  • SecurityX requires 75 CEUs per 3 years
  • Passing CySA+, PenTest+, Cloud+, or other CompTIA certs during the renewal cycle earns significant CEUs
  • Microsoft security certifications (SC-200, SC-300, AZ-500) each earn CompTIA CEUs
  • Publishing technical content (blog posts, talks) counts
  • Security conferences attended count

Build a CEU strategy from day one. Renewal is much easier when it’s planned rather than scrambled at year 2.


Final Thoughts

SecurityX is worth the investment if you’re at the right career stage. It validates the kind of broad, deep thinking that experienced practitioners actually bring to their work.

The study process matters. Go through it methodically, identify your gaps early, and practice scenarios relentlessly. The people who fail this exam usually didn’t fail because they lacked knowledge — they failed because they underestimated how differently this exam tests that knowledge.
